Hello,

I write to you today with an update on the August shooting incident that injured two Spelman College students and two students enrolled in Clark Atlanta University. I am pleased to share that all of the students are on their way to a full recovery.

Last night, the Atlanta Police Department arrested one person of interest. They are still looking for another suspect. Spelman will continue to cooperate with APD in their investigation. If you have any information about the incident, please be sure to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477. Your call and the information you provide will remain anonymous.

While the Atlanta University Center Consortium partners continue to develop long term safety solutions, we are providing a list of locations on campus where students can study if they choose not to visit the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library in the interim.

Below are some of the campus locations where 24-hour access is available,  except where noted, to registered students:

  • Beverly Daniel Tatum Suites, First Floor Study Room

  • Laura Spelman Hall, Lower Level

  • Albro-Falconer-Manley Science Center, Computer Lab 230

  • Wellness Center Throughway during the following hours:

Monday - Thursday, 6 a.m. - 9 p.m
Friday, 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Sunday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.

This list will continue to be updated on Spelman.edu.

As a reminder, we strongly encourage all parents to sign up for Spelman Alert ,our emergency notification system, for which we shared new policies and protocols in a letter I sent last week.

With the semester fully underway, we will continue to keep you updated on security measures on campus and throughout the Atlanta University Center.

Sincerely,

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
President, Spelman College
