Dear Spelmanites,
Yesterday, you received news that Spelman College has extended Spring Break by one week and is preparing to move all in-person classes to an online format due to the risks associated with the global Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. We write now to provide additional information about the steps you will need to take over the next week and beyond.
Effective Immediately: To mitigate the risk of high population gatherings, the residence halls will
close Saturday, March 21, 2020, at 9 p.m. with the transition from in-person classes to remote learning beginning Monday, March 23, 2020.
Currently, there are no suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Spelman College. However, while you are transitioning off campus, it will be important to practice "social distancing," as much as possible. Recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a way to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus, "social distancing" involves remaining out of congregate settings, avoiding mass gatherings, and maintaining distances of at least 6 feet between you and the next person.
Please pay close attention to the
information below:

- All students living in Spelman residential facilities should collect their belongings and move out of their spaces between now and Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 9 p.m. Residential facilities will close at this time and will remain closed for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester.
- Express Checkout forms and key envelopes will be posted on all student rooms. Please complete the form, place your keys in the provided
envelope, and return items to your Resident Director’s office in your building.
- Residents should remove all personal items and dispose of trash in the designated locations outside of their building as they depart.
- Resident Life professionals will be on duty to assist you. Please call the phone number posted in your residence hall if you need move out assistance.
- We recognize that some students cannot go home (such as those from countries with travel restrictions or where studying remotely would not be feasible).
Students who may have extenuating circumstances that require them to remain in the residence halls must complete the Resident Life Emergency Hardship form. The form which will be available on Friday, March 13, 2020, on the Housing and Residence Life web page, and must be completed by the 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2020.
- The College will continue to provide housing for students who genuinely cannot return home, along with modified dining services, although they will be expected to engage in
healthful social distancing conduct. Residence Life will reach out to any student approved to stay on campus with further details.
- Non-Spelman visitors will not be permitted in the residence halls, effective immediately, with the exception of family members assisting with move-out.
